TSENATE talks growing up, releasing expectations, and writing all about it
New Zealand’s TSENATE is on the rise as this generation’s Erykah Badu or Lauryn Hill- and certainly one to watch all-around. I had the chance to ask some questions re: influence, growth, and goals. Here’s what she had to say.
What was your relationship like with music growing up? How do you think your hometown/upbringing impacted where you are now, if it did?
I’ve always felt connected to music and it’s always been a creative outlet for me. My family is from Ethiopia and I think that the Ethiopian music, especially the jazz music I was exposed to growing up, has majorly influenced the music that I’m drawn to now. I grew up in Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau) in New Zealand and I feel like it was quite a limiting environment to grow up in for those who lean more creative but I still have a deep appreciation for that city.
Who are your biggest influences? Where do you pull inspiration from?
My biggest influences are other RnB artists, both traditional and modernist. These are artists like Lauryn Hill, SZA, and Cleo Sol.
What is your writing/creative process like?
I love to write about things that come to mind throughout my day and then piece it all together when I’m in the studio working alongside a producer. I also love to take inspiration from the experiences of those around me.
Do you have a dream collaboration?
I would absolutely love to collaborate with SZA or Faye Webster. I feel like these two have really shaped me not only as a musician but as a young woman.
How do you think you have evolved as an artist since you began making music?
When I first started making music I had a very specific idea of what it meant to be an RnB artist and I’ve now come to realise that I don’t have to limit myself to one genre or creative ‘image.’
What’s the best advice you’ve been given that you wish everyone knew?
One of my beautiful friends has this one saying and it’s “what’s for you, is for you” and I’ve really been trying to live by it. I think it’s such a good way to manage rejection and know that the opportunities that aren’t meant for me will come my way.
What’s next?
I’ve recently moved to Melbourne, Australia so I hope to build an audience here. I’m working on heaps of new music and exploring new sounds so definitely keep an eye out.
